Founded by Edward Fielder, the idea started from his senior thesis at Troy University where he mixed the heavy subject matter of diabetes and the humor often found in the situations we end up in. The website and associated social media channels feature user-submitted images along with short stories about their lives with diabetes.
For example, here is Dom, who was diagnosed in 2003:
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
“When I was younger a girl asked me if she’d get diabetes if we kissed, the only thing I could think of was how stupid that question was… So, I kissed her and told her to see a doctor.”
Ha! Fantastic, right?
Additionally, Edward and his buddies often infuse funny videos into the site, using satire and comedic sketches to educate in a funny and easy to understand way.
But there’s more. The Faces of Diabetes isn’t just user submitted stories and funny videos. For two years, Edward has been traveling the Southeast, taking professional photos of people with Diabetes and learning about their lives for The Faces of Diabetes book. I can’t wait to check it out.
If you like what you’ve seen here, swing by The Faces of Diabetes to catch up on the latest submissions and stories. Maybe even submit your story! I just sent mine along this afternoon. You can also think about grabbing some cool merchandise or just sending along a donation.
I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see more inspiring stories and more action-packed cake fighting videos.
Thanks for all you do, Edward!
