Former reality star Rob Kardashian has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The 28-year old reclusive star reportedly fell ill on December 27th, prompting his family to take him to the hospital. The diagnosis came as a shock to Rob, who is the youngest of three siblings.  Unsurprisingly, Kardashian, who has kept away from the limelight for years, has yet to publicly comment on the news.

According to experts, type 2 diabetes is a serious illness that causes the body to produce high levels of blood acids known as ketones which can lead to a diabetic coma in untreated patients. However, the good news is that Rob can minimize or even avoid the need for medication by adopting the right diet and exercise program. Type 2 diabetes is caused by a poor diet, obesity and lack of exercise, which result in a metabolic syndrome where blood sugar increases and the body is unable to produce enough insulin to manage the increase. Insulin is the hormone responsible for reducing blood sugar.

Diabetes is one of the leading potentially fatal diseases in the United States, where about 1.4 million new cases are reported every year. Almost 71,000 people die from diabetes-related complications such as heart attack, hypertension, blindness, stroke, kidney failure and amputations. The disease costs nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars in health care resources each year.

The fact that Kardashian became reclusive amidst concerns about his weight and mental health means that he has been at risk for type 2 diabetes for some time. The good news though is that type 2 diabetes is one of the most preventable diseases we know. And all that Kardashian needs to do is to start exercising more and eat the right food. In short, it is mostly a lifestyle management problem where diet plays a fundamental role.

According to one study, those diagnosed with diabetes can reverse their heart problems and manage their blood sugar by engaging in just 90 seconds of intense and intermittent cycling exercises. Type 2 diabetes patients are also advised to eat both plant-based and animal protein because it improves the production of insulin in the body. A diet rich in potassium has also been shown to improve heart and kidney health.

So how is Rob Kardashian Coping?

The question on everyone’s mind is, how has Kardashian been coping since receiving the shocking diabetes diagnosis?

According to Radar Online, the reality star has yet to change his lifestyle despite the doctor’s advice, raising fears that his life might be at risk. Rob is reportedly still eating junk food, guzzling Red Bull and doesn’t exercise. To make matters worse, he has refused to monitor his blood sugar on a daily basis.

According to a family source, family members are frustrated because Kardashian is shutting everybody out and there is nothing that can be done to help him. His pancreas and kidneys are failing and he has become very sick. This has prompted real fears that this could become fatal.
